In the beginning, Riley's life was perfect. He had parents who loved him and were very successful at what they did. In most families, it was the woman who took off to take care of the baby. But in Riley's case, his mother was such a powerhouse that it was his father who took off work. His father, after all, was a lowly substitute mail carrier, while his mother had her own thriving personal relations company. Marissa was so good at her job that she could have put Kanye West back in the favor of the public. While she was completely devoted to her work, Marissa was completely devoted to her family life as well. Every day off was spent with Riley. Though she had the money to, she didn't shower Riley with gifts. If he wanted something, he had to ask for it first. Rather than take him out to the movies and the mall to go gift browsing, she stayed at home to cook him meals and just talk about his day. Every night, she did her best to be home before Riley's bed time so she could tuck him in and give him a kiss. If he asked her to, she would read him a story (time willing).
Marissa was an excellent mother in that she never forced ideas on her son, she let him develop his own interests. It was while watching television one day that Riley decided he wanted to play soccer. Marissa had never been a big soccer fan, but she never told her son that. Instead, she signed him up for the team. She drove him to every practice, was there for every game, and - more often than not - provided the half-time refreshments. She was the loudest mom on the sidelines. Because of her encouragement, - no, it had nothing to do with the coach; he was a complete jackass -, Riley had the drive to practice. Soccer wasn't something that came naturally to him. At first, he could barely kick the ball. But in the end, thanks to all the positive encouragement from his mother, he became the best player on his team. Maybe even the best player in the whole division.
Most children who grew up in Los Angeles didn't turn out so great. Their parents were always pressuring them into things they really didn't want to do, like becoming child stars who ended up never going anywhere. For Riley, it was the exact opposite. His mom didn't force him into becoming a star, but Riley's life became one long brush with fame because of her clients. Marissa was always inviting her clients over to their mansion for dinner, and sometimes even scheduled meetings at Riley's soccer games so she wouldn't have to miss a moment of his triumph. Riley met just about every single client his mother had over the course of his lifetime, and each of them rubbed off a little on him. He met Ross Childress, the guitarist from Collective Soul, who was looking for something else to do [Buffy staked Edward] after being booted out by his old band mates. Collective Soul didn't get much father after kicking him out, funnily enough. Ross ended up teaching Riley how to play the guitar. He also met a supermodel and her photographer. The photographer was the one who taught Riley some basic techniques and got him interested in photography.
School was a breeze for Riley. He was the most popular guy, not just because his mom knew a bunch of famous people, but because he was a jock as well. He lead the school soccer team to victory after victory. Every year he played on the team, they had an undefeated season. Kids were always asking Riley to get autographs from his mom's clients, and he was always happy to help. Plenty of girls had crushes on him, but Riley wasn't really romantically interested in anyone during his school days. Sure, he would hang out with girls occasionally, but he never formally dated one. That didn't stop the girls from chasing after him. His guys friends taught Riley to play up the drama by flirting with them, but Riley could never bring himself to lead a girl on. He'd been brought up to respect women and what they could do, not stomp their hearts into the ground just because his friends thought it was funny.
Then, his junior year of high school, the fun stopped cold. Apparently, his mom had been battling leukemia since the age of twelve. That year, leukemia finally won. Marissa was hospitalized for a bout a week before she died. All of Hollywood came to her funeral. Ross came too, although he wasn't nearly as famous as the other guys. He was the only one who seemed genuinely upset by her death. The other stars were just there for show. After the ceremony, Ross sidled up to Riley. He didn't say a word, just took Riley's hand in his own and gave it a squeeze. Riley threw his arms around the older man and cried into his chest. That was the first time he'd cried since infancy. At school, all of his friends deserted him. He didn't have a famous mom anymore, he was no longer cool. Riley stayed on the soccer team, even though he didn't have the energy, because his mom taught him to honor his commitments. Soccer became his saving grace. He could take all his passion and hatred and anger at the world and inject it into every kick. Some goalies lost teeth in games against him. But this enhanced talent didn't gain him any respect from his team or class mates... only fear.
Devon had an easier time bouncing back. He started dating again a little over three months after his wife died. In April of Riley's senior year, Devon remarried. His new wife was the lead singer of an up-and-coming band, and she was young enough to be his daughter. She didn't try to order Riley around; both she and Devon ignored him. Ross came to Riley's graduation when neither of his so-called parents did. During her lifetime, Marissa had save up enough money to put Riley through college. He ended up going to California State, since he didn't have his mom encouraging him to go somewhere better, much less out-of-state. He'd lost his confidence, so he didn't make any friends there the first semester of school. He did manage to get the only A in any of his courses. Since he didn't have a life to devote any of his time to, most of it was spent studying.
When he came home for Thanksgiving break, the second-most scarring moment of his life occurred. He was lying awake in his old bed, staring at the ceiling, when his step-mom Aimee slipped through the door in nothing but her underwear. In short, she tried to seduce him. Riley panicked, triggering strength he didn't know he had. He held her arms behind her back and forced her back out of his room, locking the door once she was out. Three months later, he got an email from his dad. Apparently, the night after she'd tried to get Riley to give up his virginity, Aimee had gone and slept with her actual husband. She was now pregnant. He didn't come home that summer, afraid that - even as a fat, pregnant lady - his step mom would try to rape him again. Instead, he spent a small portion of his inheritance on amusement parks and museum trips across California.
The next year, his math professor drafted Riley for an academic competition he called the Brain Bowl. After a month or so of practice, they had their first competition. It was a week-long series of challenges taking place in a small town in central CA. Riley and his team mates crowded in an old bus and began their four-hour drive to their hotel. When they finally arrived, everyone was hot and sweaty and tired. They hurriedly checked in and rushed to their rooms, all in the same block. Riley woke in the middle of the night to the sound of horrified screams. They seemed to be coming from all around him. One of the voices he recognized as that of his professor. Hopping out of bed, he wandered down the hall to the professor's room. The door was unlocked. Frowning, Riley pushed it open. There, on the bed, was the mutilated corpse of the professor. No one else could be seen. Riley let out the scream to end all screams and took off down the hall. He made it to the front desk, but there was no one there. So he kept running. He ran right through the front doors, hoping to get out...
Right back into the same hallway he'd just left. He turned around and tried again... and the same thing happened. He was trapped.( some other beginning's end )
